Bia Rezende's fascination with visual language and geometric shapes has led to the creation of the Graphic Sofa. The designer, who has always preferred images over long texts, saw potential in the shapes found in infographics. Her deep studies of concrete art and geometric abstractionism further fueled her inspiration, leading to the idea of transforming these forms into furniture.
The Graphic Sofa stands out for its simplicity and geometric design. Devoid of any ornaments, the sofa's unique form follows its function: to sit. It strikes a balance between structured, rigid seating and a curved design, adding a touch of lightness to any room. Ideal for receptions and living rooms, the Graphic Sofa is a testament to the power of minimalist design.
Constructed with reforestation woods, Lyptus for the structural parts and Pinus for the other parts, the Graphic Sofa is as eco-friendly as it is stylish. It features 30 density foam in its seat, carbon steel feet painted with automotive paint, and natural fabric. The sofa measures W.215cm x D.65cm x H.105cm, making it a versatile piece for various spaces.
The Graphic Sofa is not only aesthetically pleasing but also practical. It offers comfortable seating, making it perfect for public spaces such as receptions. The gap between the seat and the floor also facilitates easy cleaning. The design project, which began in November 2018 in Sao Paulo, was completed in June 2019 in the same city.
Rezende's creative process involved first considering the form, then the function and ergonomics. Inspired by Kandinsky's phrase "The line is a moving point," she explored the circular shape in its origin: the point. The creation of the sofa emerged from the observation of the circular shape and its possible functions. The major challenge was to respect ergonomics and comfort without compromising the design of the piece.
The Graphic Sofa is a testament to Bia Rezende's innovative approach to design. It combines art and functionality, offering a structured seating reminiscent of traditional sofas where people sat upright to converse. The design, which derives from two circular shapes, one being an extension of the first, is a perfect example of how art can be transformed into functional design.
